More Info
Situated on the green hills on the border with Umbria, Lubriano stands on a tufaceous promontory that extends along the Valle dei Calanchi.
Along the road that connects the town to Bagnoregio, you will find a fountain bearing a very particular inscription: “You who pass this road in summer and have an impending thirst, stop to drink this blessed water of the Louse at this source. , which in addition to quenching your thirst, can refresh your eye “
The historic center follows the tufaceous promontory on which it is located and dominates the Valle dei Calanchi. Inside there is the main square, Piazza San Giovanni Battista, from which you can enjoy a very suggestive landscape of the valley and Civita di Bagnoregio.
Inside the town, its gray tuff tower rises imperiously over the inhabited center.
Also worth seeing are the Church of San Giovanni Battista and the Bourbon del Monte palace, a fabulous example of Baroque architecture. Between alleys, arches and ancient squares, the medieval quarters of Lubriano open up, with all their ancient charm.
The name Lubriano is thought to derive from the Etruscan “Lùbrie”, which means “place of purification”, probably due to the exceptional abundance of spring waters. It is also possible to visit an old pumping station which still houses a pair of piston pumps from the first half of the 20th century.
For all lovers of botany, then, a must-see is the Flower Museum, housed in an ancient water mill. Then again the “Garden of spontaneous fruits” and the “Garden of edible herbs”, offer the visitor the opportunity to taste the fruits directly from the trees and learn about edible wild herbs.
