More Info

Gubbio is one of the oldest cities in Umbria, wonderfully preserved over the centuries and full of monuments that testify to its glorious past.

Testimony of its ancient origins are the Eugubine Tables and the Roman Theater located just outside the walls. It dominates from above the monumental Basilica of Sant’Ubaldo, guardian of the remains of the patron saint. The construction of the urban complex of Palazzo dei Consoli, symbol of the city and museum, of the hanging square (Piazza Grande) and of the Palazzo Pretorio, now the Town Hall, dates back to the beginning of the fourteenth century. Also worthy of note are Palazzo Beni, Palazzo del Bargello with the famous fountain called “dei Matti”, and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Also of great interest is the Cathedral (12th century), dedicated to Saints Mariano and Giacomo, Santa Maria Nuova, the church of Sant’Agostino (13th century) just outside the walls, San Pietro and the church of Sant’Andrea or Monastery of San Martial. In the lower part of the town is Piazza Quaranta Martiri, a market area in the Middle Ages, which houses the Church of San Francesco on the southern side.

In the Piazza Grande on May 15th of each year the “Alzata dei Ceri” takes place, which together with the episode of San Francesco and the wolf of Gubbio, is the event that has made this city famous all over the world. Still in the square, on the last Sunday of May, the “Palio della balestra” is contested between the cities of Gubbio and Sansepolcro, with the festive presence of the flag-wavers.
