More Info

Gubbio is among the oldest cities in Umbria, wonderfully preserved over the centuries and rich in monuments that testify to its glorious past.

Evidence of its ancient origins are the Eugubine Tables and the Roman Theater located just outside the walls. Dominating from above is the monumental Basilica of St. Ubaldo, custodian of the remains of the patron saint. It dates back to the early 14th century, the construction of the urban complex of the Palazzo dei Consoli, the symbol of the city and a museum site, the hanging square (Piazza Grande) and the Praetorian Palace, now the seat of the City Hall. Also noteworthy are Palazzo Beni, Palazzo del Bargello with its famous fountain known as “dei Matti,” and Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo. Also of interest are the Cathedral (12th century), dedicated to Saints Marian and James, Santa Maria Nuova, St. Augustine’s Church (13th century) just outside the walls, St. Peter’s, and St. Andrew’s Church or St. Martial Monastery. In the lower part of the settlement is Piazza Quaranta Martiri, in the Middle Ages a market area, which houses the Church of St. Francis on its southern side.

In the Piazza Grande on May 15 each year there is “The Raising of the Ceri,” which together with the episode of St. Francis and the Wolf of Gubbio, is the event that has made this town world famous. Still in the square, on the last Sunday in May, the “Palio della balestra” is contested between the cities of Gubbio and Sansepolcro, with the festive presence of the Flag-wavers.
