More Info
Sulmona, a city with ancient roots related to the destruction of Troy, according to the accounts of Ovid and Silio Italico. It was named after one of Aeneas’ companions. The historic center is surrounded by walls and divided into seven districts that compete each year in the “Joust of Chivalry,” a tradition dating back to the 13th century.
The Joust is preceded by a historical procession and consists of a knightly tournament where knights must thread rings with their lances. The prize is the “Palio,” made each year by Italian and foreign artists.
The city offers many places of interest, including the Cathedral of San Panfilo, the Santissima Annunziata complex and the Swabian Aqueduct. Visiting museums include the Civic Archaeological Museum Complex and the Museum of Confetti Art and Technology.
The city is also known for its religious traditions, such as the Good Friday Procession and the “Madonna running away” at Easter. Sulmona also contributes to the Maiella’s native agricultural biodiversity, promoting local culture and history.
