More Info

Como, the birthplace of Alessandro Volta, is home to historic Art Nouveau buildings and churches in Romanesque style, such as the basilica of Sant’Abbondio, and Gothic style, such as the Duomo, in its historic center. Also worth noting is the beauty of the Ville Comasche, including art, culture, luxury and romance.

The city hosts several markets: the two main ones, counted among the historic markets of Regione Lombardia, are located along the walls and at the Covered Market.
The Mercerie Market, along the walls from Battisti Avenue to Varese Avenue, is held Tuesday morning, Thursday morning, Saturday all day.
The Mercato Annonario, or Covered Market, is at 5 Mentana Street and is open daily Monday through Saturday. Within this market are stores, open the same hours as the neighborhood stores, stalls and the Como Farmers’ Market. Picturesque occasional markets, hobby and food and wine festivals are also held throughout the year in the old town, under the walls or in the lakeside area.

On the occasion of the patron saint’s feast on August 31, the St. Abbondio Fair is held at the Saints Cosmas and Damian complex, with the gastronomic saga combined with the traditional livestock fair.

Between August and September, the “Palio del Baradello” is held: the event is a great opportunity to relive the history of Como with a series of events recalling the festivities staged by the people of Como in March 1159 for the first visit of Emperor Frederick Barbarossa.
